Sam makes no rush for Dean's behalf, just continues at the children's leisure. Eventually the kids begin to dissipate because they've got places they're supposed to be, though Polly sheepishly wanders over to Dean with some cards in her hands. "Did you really fight ghosts and werewolves with a sword?"
But she's ushered away gently by Sam, who is just a bit flustered and silently defensive - he doesn't need to give Dean another reason to get pissed at him, for making up tall tales to enthuse the kids. Instead he straightens up, and says, "What is it?"
